Malaysia Employment Pass in Hyderabad for IT Professionals

WPV Advisory Team · 09/10/2026

Malaysia Employment Pass categories showing validity periods and succession plan requirements for IT professionals.

Malaysia has become a serious option for IT professionals in India. Kuala Lumpur is a regional centre for technology and finance and many international firms run offices there. If you work in Hyderabad or anywhere in India and have three or more years of experience then you may already match what these employers look for. This guide explains how the Malaysia Employment Pass works for IT professionals in Hyderabad and across India. It is written for anyone in Hyd who wants a clear picture of the Malaysia work visa for Indians. It covers the rules that changed on 1 June 2026 and the documents to prepare. It also shows how our Hyderabad team supports each step.

Why IT professionals from Hyd look at Malaysia

Malaysia is only two and a half hours ahead of India so working hours with Indian teams and clients stay easy to manage. English is widely used in business. Software developers and data scientists both appear on the in demand list on our Malaysia page. Many IT professionals in Hyd already work on global projects and that experience carries over well. The Employment Pass gives Indian professionals a clear employer sponsored route into this market.

What the Malaysia Employment Pass is for IT professionals in Hyderabad

The Employment Pass is a work permit for foreign professionals who take up a managerial or executive or technical position in Malaysia. It is linked to one employer and one role. You cannot apply for it on your own. Your employer applies for approval of the position first and then for your pass.

For IT professionals this is the standard route into a Malaysian tech career. It is also the base for longer term options such as bringing family or applying for a residence pass later.

How employer sponsorship works in Malaysia

Employer sponsorship in Malaysia follows a set order. Our work permits service handles these stages for employers and for the professionals they hire:

  1. ESD registration. The employer registers with the Expatriate Services Division of the Immigration Department.

  2. Expatriate quota. The employer obtains approval for the expatriate position.

  3. JTK approval. The employer secures the labour department approval that supports the application.

  4. Employment Pass issue. The pass is issued once the approvals and your documents are in order.

Companies with Malaysia Digital status follow a variation of this route. They use the MDEC eXpats service and MDEC approves the position before the Immigration Department issues the pass. Ask your employer which route it uses because it decides who reviews your file.

Qualifications and experience for IT professionals

For an IT professional with three or more years of experience the checks are usually simple.

  • On the standard route a degree plus at least three years of relevant experience is the benchmark most often applied. Diploma holders are generally expected to show more years.

  • On the MDEC route the test is wider. A bachelor’s degree in any field qualifies. So does an ICT diploma or certification with two years of relevant experience. Previous work in ICT enabled services also counts.

  • Your CV and experience letters must match the role in your contract. Titles and dates and duties that do not line up can lead to questions.

Your employer must also explain why the role needs skills that are hard to find locally. Keep proof of your technology stack and certifications and project scope. This helps the employer make a stronger case.

The three Employment Pass categories from 1 June 2026

Malaysia revised the Employment Pass rules for all new and renewal applications filed on or after 1 June 2026. The pay bands rose sharply and validity periods are now fixed. Your category depends on the basic pay in your contract.

  • Category I: Senior professionals and executives in the highest pay band; validity up to 10 years; succession plan not required.

  • Category II: Mid-level professionals and managers in the middle pay band; validity up to 10 years; succession plan required.

  • Category III: Technical specialists and junior executives in the entry pay band; validity up to 5 years; succession plan required.

An IT professional with three to seven years of experience will usually land in Category II or Category III. The exact category depends on the basic pay in the offer. Ask your employer to name the category in writing before you accept.

Why basic pay decides your category

The bands are measured against basic pay only. Allowances and bonuses and benefits in kind do not count towards them. Two offers with the same total package can therefore fall in different categories if one has a higher basic component.

Check that your contract states the basic pay clearly. Payroll records should match it. Many online guides still describe the rules before 1 June 2026 so treat any older information with caution.

What the succession plan means

For Category II and Category III your employer must show a plan to develop a Malaysian employee who can take over the role in time. This is now part of the application. Ask your employer whether the plan is ready. A missing plan can delay approval.

Documents to prepare in Hyderabad

Your employer or adviser will confirm the exact list. IT professionals in Hyderabad usually prepare the following.

  • A passport with plenty of validity.

  • Degree and diploma certificates attested or apostilled as instructed.

  • Experience letters from each previous employer showing dates and roles.

  • An updated CV that shows the experience the application relies on.

  • A police clearance certificate and a medical report where required.

  • The signed employment contract that states your basic pay.

Ask for your experience letters early. Past employers can take weeks to issue them and that delay is easy to avoid.

Step by step from offer to arrival

  1. Receive an offer. Your Malaysian employer sends an offer that names the role and the basic pay.

  2. Employer seeks approvals. The employer completes ESD registration and the expatriate quota and JTK approval steps.

  3. Send your documents. You provide your documents to the employer or adviser.

  4. Employer files your pass. The employer submits your Employment Pass application.

  5. Receive approval. You receive an approval letter and instructions for travel.

  6. Travel and complete formalities. You travel to Malaysia and complete the remaining steps your employer explains.

Processing times at a glance

  • Employment Pass (New Application): 4–6 weeks

  • Employment Pass (Renewal): 2–4 weeks

  • Professional Visit Pass: 2–4 weeks

  • Tech Pass: 4–6 weeks

  • Residence Pass-Talent: 6–8 weeks

These are typical times once the employer’s application is complete. Plan your notice period and travel around the approval date. Do not resign from your current job until the pass is approved.

Other passes that may matter to you

The Employment Pass is not the only pass in our Malaysia service list. Four others are worth knowing about.

  • Dependent Pass and Long Term Social Visit Pass. Covers a spouse and children and a parent. A spouse who wants to work can apply for a Letter of Consent. Our family visa service handles these filings.

  • Professional Visit Pass. Suits short technical or training assignments and project based deployments. An IT team member from Hyd who goes to Malaysia for a client project may fit here and not under an Employment Pass.

  • Tech Pass. Issued with MDEC endorsement for digital leaders and tech entrepreneurs. It offers flexibility for founders and for holding more than one role. It is not the usual route for an employed engineer.

  • Residence Pass Talent. A TalentCorp endorsed residence pass for high achieving professionals. It carries spouse work rights. Our page states that Employment Pass holders may move to it after three years of continuous employment.

Adviser commentary expects the Residence Pass Talent rules to be reviewed after the 2026 Employment Pass changes. Check the current criteria before you plan your stay around it.

Points to check before you sign

  • Your contract states the basic pay and not only the total package.

  • The category your employer will file under is named in writing.

  • The contract length fits the validity of that category.

  • For Category II and Category III the succession plan is ready.

  • You will not need to resign before the pass is approved.

Common mistakes IT professionals in Hyderabad make

  • Treating the total package as basic pay

  • Accepting an offer before the category is confirmed

  • Relying on guides that were written before 1 June 2026

  • Waiting too long to collect experience letters

  • Resigning before the pass is approved

  • Assuming the pass moves with you to a new employer
